I just came back from Paris, and I have a picture of this statue. I don't know the name, but it's from the Musee d'Orsay, and it was this statue and another one with the old man cuddling a female form in his arms that caught my attention the most. Great photo!
I like this shot a lot better. It's about the amputation thing again.. you didn't crop off any limbs this time.
In order to show more detail, I'd zoom in (or crop) much tighter onto a single detail (the spindle maybe or a hand) and therefore keep distraction to a minimum. To me it's either big overview or going in really close. This one would be a "big overview" one for me. The first one you posted had a kind of "in-bettween-ish" feeling to me, if you know what I mean.
